This past fall, Micaiah was proud to have two paintings featured at the 9th California Islands Symposium. Hosted in Ventura, CA, the Symposium brings together the agencies and organizations of the California Islands along with Professors, Biologists, Archeologists, Philosophers, and Anthropologists to host workshops and talks on a variety of different subjects focused around the preservation and restoration of the California Islands.
The new documentary, West of the West: Tales from California’s Channel Islands, was shown in a private screening at the Symposium. Produced by Sam Tyler and written and directed by Peter Seaman and Brent Sumner, the documentary provides an in-depth look into stories of island inhabitants, ranging from the first contact between Spanish explorers and the Island Chumash to the National Park Service’s efforts to restore the islands’ ecosystems. If you aren't completely smitten with the California Islands already, watch the documentary and fall in love with this rich part of California's history and ecosystem.
All of this has served to feed Micaiah's momentum diving ever deeper in California's coastal landscapes and histories, ultimately inspiring a new set of paintings that will go up on the triptych mural located in downtown Encinitas on Coast HWY 101 this coming summer.
